Charity Adams Earley

Charity Adams Earley (1918–2002) was the first African-American woman to be an officer in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (later WACS) and was the commanding officer of the first battalion of African-American women to serve overseas during World War II. Adams was the highest ranking African-American woman in the army by the completion of the war.
==Early life and Education==
Born in 1918 in Columbia, South Carolina, Adams' father was a minister and her mother was a teacher. Adams was the oldest of four children. She graduated high school from Booker T. Washington High School as valedictorian and college from Wilberforce University in Ohio in 1938, majoring in math and physics.〔 After graduation she returned to Columbia and taught school while attending graduate school at Ohio State University during the summer months.〔
